In June 2008 I purchased this car, a 1991 Honda CRX DX, for $1995. With only 109,000 miles on the odometer It was completely stock, save for a Sony head unit, and showed only a few dents and easily-repaired rust spots. I’ve spent some time doing repair and minor maintenance work on it, but so far have left it largely unmolested. The specs on this particular vehicle:
1991 Honda CRX DX
- D15B2 1492cc inline-4, 92hp @ 6000rpm, 89 lb-ft @ 4500prm, DPFI
- 5 speed manual transmission
- Double A-Arm front suspension, multilink rear suspension
- 13″ steel wheels with 175/70-13 tires
- 2103 lbs curb weight
- 32/36 MPG!
The car is not without its faults, including what’s either a worn selector fork or marginal synchro on 3rd gear that causes it to grind at high RPMs (a common problem in Honda transmissions of this type), a coup of small rust spots on the reat wheel wells, and some other niggling things. Right now it’s riding on crappy Wal-Mart offbrand tires (not my fault!) that don’t do it any favors. I’m doing my darnedest to scrape them off the wheels with some autocrossing in H Stock, but so far they are proving to be remarkably resilient in addition to unreasonably hard. In the short term, I plan to get the car back into shape, but looking a bit farther I want to build it it to run in STS2. Things I want to do to it include:
- Some lightweight wheels with good tires (Kosei K1s or Falken Hanabis, probably)
- Ground Control coilovers and Koni yellows or KYB AGXs, depending on budget
- Transmission rebuild
- Some exhaust work
- Cold air intake
- Racing seats and harnesses, possibly
All that takes money, though, and in the meantime I’m well-served learning to drive well in HS and getting the hang of basic maintenance. It’s a lot a fun, practical, and very economical. Just nobody run into me…
